Finish and bring all parts of the project for the FINAL CRITIQUE (I am changing part of the syllabus listing as we will have the crit on Wednesday instead of working during class due to the holiday)
***HOMEWORK TO DO: is listed below the second set of images showing stages of the Value project below. There is a step-by-step handout linked at the end of this post. If you can’t get Pathfinder/Divide of Shape Builder to work, please let me know. Use closed shapes not open paths for both.
1. Your four objects so we can see them in person 2. materials you used to collage, paint and draw 3. your computer with documents and a photo of your museum sculpture 4. your sketchbook with drawings for the project. 5. Five drawings-(contour, positive-negative, negative-positive, print out of value project made in Illustrator and the mixed media version made by hand) .**You will use these items to show and talk about during the crit as you see in the two images below. 5. Save your file in your Drive folder as value_your name_di_spring18.ai (along with the jpeg version saved as value hand drawing_your name_di_sp18.ai)
You can also scan your value mixed media_your name_di_spring18.jpg and place that in the drive folder.
Above is an example of the total process. What you need to bring to class are the last two stages shown above. Please remember to leave areas created in Pathfinder showing when you apply mixed media on top.

Complete the Illustrator portion of your value drawing and print it out for homework. You will also finish the hand-drawn version on a second printout.
You can draw, paint and collage by hand. REMEMBER: The contour, positive-negative and value images should relate in some way. For example, the value image can include:
use of strong black and white areas for value and contour lines.
1. Have Contour, Positive-Negative, Negative-Positive and Value Illustrator and Value mixed media drawings completely finished.
2. Study all reference and Value Handout (discussed in class).

Value Drawing Process:
Scan or photograph your tight line drawing of the value composition, (3oo dpi jpeg). Place it in Illustrator. Complete nine black, white and grayscale aspects (brush if desired) in Adobe Illustrator along with some mixed media (you can also create nine monochromatic or single color value swatches through the Blends technique shown in class). The other hand applied black, white and gray materials you use to complete the project are up to you. You can use black, white, gray texture, collage, paint, ink, etc. For collage, use textured black, white or gray papers, newspapers, mirrored papers, etc. You will use your same objects in a different composition along with the museum piece for the third portion of the project. Most of the same objects have to appear in all three parts of the project to tie them together. Note: you can draw the text and any surface patterns you could not use in the contour and positive/negative versions. (use the tools listed below).

Illustrator tools: Use: pen, direct select, convert anchor point, add anchor point, subtract anchor point. smooth tool, (object/path/simplify), shapes, shape builder, pathfinder/divide, nine greyscale applications from the swatch palette.
Optional: curvature tool, gradients, brushes, and type/type on a path.
Not allowed: Image Trace
DIGITAL TIPS: Use all of the grayscale values in your swatches. Strategically repeat various values throughout the drawing to create continuation for the eye. ALWAYS-make sure your Illustrator drawing layer is separate from you original placed layer. Lock the placed layer at the beginning to be sure. Always place the Illustrator drawing layer above the placed layer. Draw only on one layer creating sub-layers as you go along. Ungroup after you use Divide in Pathfinder to work on separated shapes. SAVE your drawing continuously. Save the final in your D/I-Museum Triptych-Illustrator- (and finally) Value folder. Share the file with me in your Google Drive folder. Naming conventions: value_(your name)_di_sp18
